Back to the Hospital

When Kiley was 10 days old she gave us quite a scare. She had a fussy night where she would not settle down unless Gene or I were holding her. It continued all night long and I felt that something was not right. At about 4:30 AM I decided to take her temp and found an axillary temp of 99.9. We called the pediatrician and were told to take her temp rectally and head to the ER if it was 100.4 or higher. It was 100.4, so we called Grandma and Grandpa T. to see if we could drop Andrew off at their house. Noah was having fun up at Grandma and Grandpa B's house already since Gene was supposed to be heading up to Wisconsin for Jamie B's high school graduation and Grandma B. had been down in Indianapolis earlier in the week to help out and see Kiley. So at about 5:30 AM we were off to drop Andrew off and take Kiley to the ER. I had never even been to the ER for anything in my whole life, so this was a new experience. They ended up admitting Kiley and we were told she would be there for at least 72 hrs to receive IV antibiotics and to wait for the results of blood, urine and cerebral fluid cultures. Because of Kiley was so little it took literally 15 sticks and lots of tears, by Kiley and Mommy, to get her IV started. I stayed with Kiley at the hospital the whole time since I'm breast feeding her. All the cultures ended up being negative, so they contributed the fever to a virus, however some of her blood labs came back funny and so Kiley had to go for further lab work later to check on things. At least we were able to D/C to home on Saturday. Unfortunately Gene was forced to miss Jamie's high school graduation, but she understood the reason. The Sunday after graduation Gene drove half way to Milwaukee to meet his Mom, Jamie and Noah. Jamie and Noah came home with Gene and Jamie was my helper for 2 wks. It was so nice to have an extra set of hands and eyes around the house during my recovery and while the boys were getting used to having a baby around the house. Thanks Jamie for being understanding about Gene missing graduation and for coming to help out and for your company too.
